Okay, I've been struggling with this for ages, and have enough data to come
back here.
* Xen 4.8 ('xl info' outputs 4.8.4-pre, but it's Debian
version 4.8.3+xsa267+shim4.10.1+xsa267-1+deb9u9)
* QEMU emulator version 2.12.0 (Debian 1:2.12+dfsg-3)
Trying to boot a Knoppix or Debian Live ISO inside an HVM fails: CD-ROM
emulation fails.
What's extremely strange is that 32-bit kernels boot just fine, it's just
64-bit kernels that have a problem.
Furthermore, the kernels don't exhibit this problem if I run qemu directly
(no Xen acceleration).
Having libata dump the IDENTIFY data had a most curious result: all zeroes.
